Ai Tennoji (天 (てん) 王 (のう) 寺 (じ) 曖 (あい) Ten'nōji Ai?) is a ninja princess from Soga Village. She ran away from home in search of her lost sister, and Shy.

Ai is a petite young girl of very pale complexion. She has back-length black hair with bangs swept up and pinned to the left side of her face, and slanted dark eyes. She has a beauty mark below her left eye. Ai has a scar in her chest that was caused by Mai Tennoji when she was younger. Even though the wound didn't kill her, it still made her heart and her overall constituition weak. Ai is usually seen in a school-like uniform which consists of a long-sleeved shirt underneath a vest, a ribbon, skirt, knee high socks and loafers.

When she tranforms, her hair is in a ponytail with a ribbon, and she wears a short, white kimono with an obi sash tied around her waist, arm sleeves, high socks, karuta armour on both her arms and legs, and geta on her feet.

Personality

Ai is a polite and refined young girl. In the Japanese original version, she utilizes "Uchi" (うち?) to refer to herself, which is mostly used by females in the Kansai dialect as Iko Koishikawa noticed.[1] Since she never left her home on her own, she is ignorant in various matters regarding modern tecnology and what would be common knowledge for Japanese people, such as karaoke, arcade and even department stores.[2] Ai can be pretty forceful at times, just like when she invited herself over to Teru's house out of the blue. Teru considers this a part of her "princess persona."[3]

She is very obstinate and refuses to act in the way her village and Tokimaru expect. As Ai was isolated from the outside world for pretty much her whole life, she wants to be free from her village's shackles and explore the world by herself, even if it means running away from her home with nothing but her sword by her side. Ai has also a very strong perception of justice and thinks it's strange for shinobi to stay hidden in times when they are needed, and want to change this notion.

When Ai was younger, she was quite different from her current self. Contrary to Mai, Ai liked to fight and would often feel jealous of her sister's talent as a shinobi. If not for Tokimaru, they may have not be able to reconcile. Even so, it is clear she still loved her sister very much but, as she later apologized for it, she struggled to truly understand her.[4]

Abilities

Overall Abilities: Just like any other shinobi in her village, she was trained since she was young in the arts of shinobi. She has a very deep understanding of Hearts and their importance in everyday life, as well as in battle. Even though her physical condition is not good ever since she was attacked by her sister in the heart, she is still capable of very astonishing feats. Ai was capable of getting on top of a torii easily just to argue with Tokimaru,[5] and she effortlessly throws rocks across a river into a tree's stum, which was revealed to be basic training for shuriken throwing back in her village.[6]

Swordsmanship Specialist: Even though her physical stamina is poor and she easily loses her breath over simple movements, Ai is trained in the art of the self-defense, and is especially skilled with the sword. It was first displayed as she easily knocked out a purse snatcher in front of Teru Momijiyama and Iko.[7] Her abilities extend to any type of blade, as she demonstrated she can adeptly cut ingredients in a very fast manner.[8]

Techniques

  • Ninja Art: Sakura Cloak (忍 (にん) 法 (ぽう) 　桜 (さくら) 隠 (がく) れの術 (じゅつ) Ninpō: Sakuragakure no Jutsu?): Ai creates a veil of cherry blossom petals to make her and whoever is with her go unnoticed by their enemies. This technique was first used by her when they needed to escape an ambush of zombie-like civilians.[9]

"Heart Blade" Purity (心 (しん) 刀 (とう) ・無 (む) 垢 (く) Shintō: Muku?): Ai is in the possession of Purity since she was a little child, and it accompanies her wherever she goes. This special heartblade is able to communicate with Ai and read the heart of those who touch it. It may be a powerful weapon, or an useful tool depending on Ai's emotions.[10] When Ai temporarily merged with Utsuro Karakururi, Shy became Purity's temporary wielder.

  • Mystic Art: Sakura Storm (秘 (ひ) 剣 (けん) 　乱 (みだ) れ桜 (ざくら) Hiken: Midarezakura?): Ai brandishes Purity against her opponent to create a small, but powerful gale that pushes them away from her. This technique was first used against Tokimaru.[11]
  • Mystic Art "Basket of Flowers" (秘 (ひ) 剣 (けん) 『花 (はな) 篝 (かがり) 』 Hiken "Hanakagari"?): Ai passes through her opponent while unleashing powerful slashes with Purity. It was first used against Utsuro Karakururi, though it had no effect on her.[12]
    • Mystic Art, Flower Basket Redux "Ephemeral Moonflower" (秘 (ひ) 剣 (けん) 花 (はな) 篝 (かがり) ・流 (る) 転 (てん) 『鏡 (きょう) 花 (か) 水 (すい) 月 (げつ) 』 Hiken, Hanakagari: Ruten "Kyōka Suigetsu"?):[13] Ai unleashes a circular slash from below to above against her opponent.
  • Mystic Art: White Jade Flash (秘 (ひ) 剣 (けん) 　白 (はく) 玉 (ぎょく) 楼 (ろう) Hiken: Hakugyokurō?): Ai charges against her opponent, spins her blade and then stabs them in the chest. It was first used against Utsuro,[14] and it was so powerful that it should've killed Utsuro if she hadn't fused with Ai afterwards.[15]
  • Mystic Art, Shadow Style: Four Sides Flower Branches (秘 (ひ) 剣 (けん) 裏 (うら) 式 (しき) 　四 (し) 面 (めん) 楚 (そ) 花 (か) Hiken, Urashiki: Shimen Soka?):[13] Ai unleashes four rapid slashes against her opponent. Those slashes immediately hit them and form a lotus flower.
  • Mystic Art "Tiger King Whirlwind" (秘 (ひ) 剣 (けん) 『虚 (こ) 桜 (おう) 旋 (せん) 風 (ぷう) 』 Hiken "Ko'ō Senpū"?): This technique was performed by Ai alongside Utsuro. They would unleash rapid, regular slashes against their opponent. It was used against Holy Mother Bear, and it was strong enough to break through its diamond claws.[16]
  • Soga School (霜 (そう) 賀 (が) 流 (りゅう) Sōga-ryū?):
    • Mystic Art "Flowers from the Twin Sāla Trees" (双 (そう) 忍 (にん) 法 (ぽう) 『沙 (さ) 羅 (ら) 双 (そう) 樹 (じゅ) ・華 (はな) 』 Sō-ninpō "Sara Sōju: Hana"?): This technique was performed by Ai alongside Utsuro. After uniting hands and keeping their blades parallel to each other, both of them would attack with a single strike with Purity. It was strong enough to break Holy Mother Bear's diamond teeth.[17]

Trivia

  • Her last name has the kanji for "heaven" (天?), "king" (王?) and "temple" (寺?). It may come from the Shitenno-ji. Her first name means "dark" or "not clear" (曖?), and it is homophone to the kanji for "love" (愛?).
    • When put together with the kanji of her sister's name, they form the term for "vague" or "ambiguous" (曖昧?).
  • She likes ninja training and ajarimochi.
  • In regards to her character, Kotori Koiwai commented:
“ My name is Kotori Koiwai, and I will be voicing Ai Tennoji. Although Ai is the oldest of the ninja sisters, she worries a lot about her lack of power, but is a girl with a strong core who walks straight ahead. I will try to carefully understand the subtleties of her heart and take on the challenge of recording.
And... This is a bit personal, but I really love ninjas...! I'm happy that one of my dreams has come true.
