“ | We Heroes have a mission. That is, to protect the 'heart' of this Earth itself. | ” |
"Because I'm Shy" (シャイなので Shai nano de?) is the first chapter of the first volume of the SHY manga series.
Summary
The chapter begins with a brief summary of the world's current situation: Heroes misteriously appeared and stopped World War III from happening, achieving peace once again. American Hero Leader Century has saved an airplane and all its passengers were rescued without major injuries. Russian Hero Spirit captured a gang of bank robbers easily. English Hero Stardust performed a giant concert for charity.
Meanwhile, Japanese Hero Shy is struggling to entertain the very public that came to Heartman's show in Himawari Land. She leaves the stage in a hurry and throws up in nervousness as she arrives in her dressing room. Her partner, N. Villio, tries to comfort her but to no avail. Suddenly they hear a scream, only to discover that the roller coaster's cart just stopped in the middle of the loop.

Shy saves Iko.
As Shy arrives to save the civilians, Iko Koishikawa asks her to rescue the others first. Although reluctantly, the hero complies. However, when she was about to save Iko as well, the cart starts moving backwards and get off the rails in the process. Shy tries to save her by putting herself in front of it and successfully stops the cart before it could crash down, however, Iko still got injured.
Roughly a month later, due to social represalia given Iko's current status, Teru Momijiyama (Shy's civilian identity) has shut herself down and didn't make any public appearances since then. N. Villio attempts to cheer her up but she is unable to transform and do any hero work because her heart is not into it. All of a sudden, however, Spirit appears by her side to advise her that she couldn't save everyone. Teru gets upset, however, as her analogies confuse her, but the hero leaves before she could question her further.
Later, she is seen at a store, still thinking about what Spirit has told her. As she overhears people talking about her hero identity, Teru leaves in a hurry to not listen to them. Suddenly, a fire truck passes by her in the opposite direction, which makes her notice that T-1 Hotel is on fire. She tries to transform in an alley nearby, but her insecurities prevent her from doing so.

"I am Shy!"
Just then, she notices a young boy as he attemps to convince a firefighter to let him save people like Shy does. He passes through him and is almost hit by a falling debris of an explosion, but Teru saves him just in time. Once again motivated, she transforms into Shy after a long time and jumps to the buildig. Although she seems confident, she is actually extremely nervous. As Shy gets inside, she starts searching for any victims and finds a unconscious mother with her baby. Before her thoughts take her elsewhere, she takes both of them in her arms and tries to leave the building.
Another explosion happens, however, which makes her let go of the baby. She jumps through the window to try and save the baby, as Spirit arrives just in time to save both of them. After the fire is supressed, and Shy and Spirit's job is already done, civilians recognize the latter, leaving Shy to receive the sincere thanks from Daigo for saving not only him, but also his older sister. Before leaving, he tells her Iko has fully recovered and could return to school by now. Spirit returns to also tell Shy that the woman she saved regained consciousness at the hospital, so she should feel proud of herself.
As they leave the scene, Spirit says she has remembered why she came to her the first time: to tell her the true mission of heroes, that is, to protect the heart of Earth itself.
