The shinobi (忍 (しの) び?), also known as ninja (忍 (にん) 者 (じゃ) ?), are a secret and isolated society with the sole objective of protecting the world from the shadows. According to Ai Tennoji, shinobi would use their skills in times of war to defeat evildoers and save those in need. As noted by Teru Momijiyama, they are very similar to heroes.[1] The only known shinobi village is Soga Village.

Description[]

The shinobi are a very secretive society and not even the heroes seem to be aware of their existence. They live in villages across Japan, away from technology and the modernity of the big cities. Ai herself is a huge example of their isolated nature, as she didn't know what a karaoke or an arcade was, even though she knew the basics of how to ride a train.[2] Shinobi may receive training ever since they are little. They learn traditional ninja arts, as well as to suppress their hearts and control their emotions.[3] They also learn how to read the heart of every single object and living being around them.[4]

Shinobi, or at the very least Soga Village, excel at the production and usage of special types of swords called "heartblades," which are able to convey its users' hearts in a more efficient manner. Purity and Nihil are the only currently known heartblades to exist and both embody opposite concepts.

  • When putting the kanji for "blade" (刃?) and "heart" (心?) together, the kanji for "shinobi" (忍?) is formed.[5]
