So many Hearts on this star... All locked away and hidden from sight, trapped inside these human-shaped cages. They are convinced that their true side needs to be hidden. By destroying these cages, I shall convince them otherwise. I shall let the world see, the true form of their Hearts! How beautiful they truly are.

Stigma's speech in "The Mission of Heroes"

Stigma (スティグマ Sutiguma?)[2] is a mysterious young boy and the leader of Amarariruku, a villainous organization. He is the main antagonist of the SHY manga and anime series.

Appearance

Although his age is unknown, Stigma appears to be a mischievous, young boy with fair complex. His face is covered with freckles and he is always with a calm, almost abnormally happy expression. Stigma has messy, short blonde hair which sticks up at odd angles around his head, casting noticeably dark shadows onto itself and guileful, golden eyes. He is always seen with a white long-sleeved shirt and pants held with suspenders.

Personality

Stigma is a frighteningly calm and collected young boy. By his first appearance, he showed himself as a quite ruthless and twisted person with mysterious goals. Not much is know about his true thoughts but Iko Koishikawa once said that he's like someone who doesn't want to grow up, forcefully childish by the ways his Heart seemed to be. He finds the true nature of Hearts as something beautiful and is unfazed by danger, as he always smiles even with Heroes pursuing him.

History

Stigma first appeared in England, to which he used Stardust's friend as a weapon of havoc through his rings. Stardust was obliged to take his friend's finger off to stop the chaos.

Synopsis

Volume 1

Stigma suddenly appears at Tanpopo Middle School's nurse's office after Teru Momijiyama left Iko Koishikawa alone, feeling pain in her leg. He embraces her, finding it "pitiful". Iko asks who he is but he only tells her she shouldn't hide her heart from others, putting a dark-looking ring on her finger. Making a monologue about the true nature of the heart, Teru returns and see a monster-looking version of Iko. He appears in front of her, finding her heart beautiful and telling Teru that he just freed her heart, stating that humans needed to set their hearts free. Teru asks him what he wants and he responds the same thing, breaking Iko's crystallized wing, making her fall and scream in pain. He then appears observing Shy and Iko from afar after everything was resolved.

Volume 2

Amarariruku

Stigma founds the Amarariruku.

Stigma revives Letana Andreanova as Tzveta Kooriskaya, and sends her to the Arctic to deal with the Heroes. Just as she ends up falling asleep due to one of Mian Long's techniques, Stigma appears in the Arctic along with other members of his organization to take Tzveta away. He likes the names of Heroes, especially Mian Long, who is eventually saved by Spirit. Stigma decides to name them Amarariruku and leaves the Heroes behind.

Volume 4

Following Tzveta's disappearance, Stigma consoles Keheheh Kekerakera, assuring her that they would all be united in the end.

Volume 5

Stigma visits Utsuro Karakururi in Tokyo Tower to talk with her. As she views herself as a pawn in his hands, he denies that notion, and tells her he can help her realize that dream. He then tells her to look up into the sky.

Volume 7

Stigma abducts an innocent civilian

Stigma abducts an innocent civilian.

Stigmas appears on top of the black dome created by Utsuro and he is seen in the news. Somehow, he is able to take the young reporter and transmits her corruption through his ring. He thanks Quabala Quabala, who helped him transmit everything, and dodges Stardust's attack. He provokes him on what he would do about the corrupted civilian, but as the hero simply takes it off, orders Quabala to fight him. She doesn't comply immediately, but he intimidates her to do so.

Stardust seems to easily defeat her and attacks Stigma, but he is unfazed by this. He says the easiest way to reach people's heart is through fear, and right at this moment, Quabala severely injures Stardust. She was able to possess him and Stigma praises her for it, giving her his blood, to which she gets ecstatic. He is convinced Stardust will be defeated, but is instead attacked with Ashes to Stardust. Stigma is injured by this attacks, but is unfazed by this fact. He reveals to the hero that his true goal is to actually break the dome.

Stardust is unable to hurt him further due to Quabala's interference and they leave.

Volume 10

Stigma laments Utsuro Karakururi's death with the rest of the Amarariruku and punishes Doki Baragaki since he left Keheheh Kekerakera behind. Sekirara Lovesong comes to his aid, however, and Ruiz Ice-Walker questions on how Utsuro was defeated if she was unparalled in combat. He states Shy is their biggest obstacle as of now and tells them they may play with her however they find fit.

Volume 11

As Keheheh Kekerakera is about to state what she would like for a birthday gift to Pepesha Andreanova, Stigma invades the Space HQ to take her back with him.

Equipment

Made in Heart (心遺物 (メイド・イン・ハート) Meido in Hāto?): Stigma created various dark-colored rings which can increase darkness in human's Hearts. It has a piece of his own Heart so that he can be connected to the person he gave the ring to. It gives the ability to produce black crystals which the user can attack his opponents with. The only way to make them return to their sane state of mind is removing the ring from their finger or simply cut their finger off.

Quotes

  • (To Iko Koishikawa) "Pitiful. Pitiful girl. You hide your Heart and cry alone. Who made you this way? Why must you hide your Heart deep inside? Wouldn't it be better to let yourself be free? Now, don't be shy. Let the world see your Heart..."[3]
  • "So many Hearts on this star... All locked away and hidden from sight, trapped inside these human-shaped cages. They are convinced that their true side needs to be hidden. By destroying these cages, I shall convince them otherwise. I shall let the world see, the true form of their Hearts! How beautiful they truly are."[4]

Trivia

  • "Stigma" is a mark of disgrace associated with a particular circumstance, quality, or person but it's also marks corresponding to those left on Jesus' body by the Crucifixion. A social stigma is a strong disapproval of personal characteristics or beliefs, which go against cultural norms.
  • In regards to her character, Mutsumi Tamura commented:
Even after many dubbing sessions, Stigma is still a difficult character. He is empty inside, and you don't know who he is talking to, or what he is really thinking... but maybe it's precisely because he is so full of things we don't know that we are drawn to him. Maybe we are curious about him. Will his inner self gradually fill up as he interacts with Shy, or will we see what is there? I'm looking forward to it!
In any case,
SHY is a work that will warm your heart! I want everyone to laugh and cry!! Thank you!
